In a deep bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer.
Add the egg and vanilla. Sift the flour along with the spices.
Add the mixture 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. The dough will be very stiff.
Add the last of the flour by hand. Roll out the dough. Cut the cookies using the cookie cutters.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until done. After baking, place the cookies on a rack and cool completely.
For the icing:
Make sure all utensils are grease-free. Beat all ingredients for 7 to 10 minutes. When finished, cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying.
