Mix 2 cups of dry Marsala, 2 cups of water, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and orange zest in a large pot. Wait for the water to boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add the peeled pears and reduce the heat to medium-low.
Using a large spoon, transfer the pears to a serving dish. Boil the liquid until it reduces to 1 1/2 cups, about 12 minutes. Pour the reduced liquid over the pears and cool until cold (at least 3 hours).
Divide the pears among 6 shallow bowls, pour the syrup (strained) over the pears, and garnish with light whipped cream if desired.
