Sugar Skulls

On the next Day of the Dead, prepare these Sugar Skulls. The skulls are a typical decoration on the Altars of the Dead. They are an essential part of the decoration for this Mexican holiday. This Sugar Skull recipe is very easy to make. Have fun making them with your kids.

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup, egg white
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 teaspoons vanilla essence
  • 1/3 cups cornstarch
  • food coloring, in different colors

  • Sift the powdered sugar, then add the egg white, honey, and vanilla.
  • Knead the mixture until it forms a ball.
  • Dust a surface with cornstarch (like flour).
  • Roll out the mixture with a rolling pin until smooth.
  • Using a plastic mold, line it with the dough and make the skulls.
  • Wait for the mixture to cool and cut the skull's face in half, then stick them together with a bit of powdered sugar and egg white.
  • If you don't have a plastic skull-shaped mold, you can shape the mixture like playdough to form a skull.
  • With the food coloring, paint eyes, a mouth, or write any name you want on the forehead.
  • You can also decorate with sequins or shakers, BE CAREFUL: The sequins and shakers are not edible.
