Sugar skulls

On the next Day of the Dead, prepare these Calaveritas de Azúcar. The calaveritas are a typical adornment in the Altars of the Dead. These are an essential part of the decoration in this Mexican party. This Sugar Calaveritas recipe is very easy to make. Have fun with your children preparing them.

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup, clear
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 teaspoons vanilla essence
  • 1/3 cups cornstarch
  • food coloring, of different colors

  • Pass the glass sugar through a sieve, then add the clear, honey and vanilla.
  • Knead the mixture until it forms a ball.
  • Sprinkle with cornstarch on a surface (as if it were flour).
  • Stretch the mixture with a rolling pin until smooth.
  • With the help of a plastic mold cover with the dough and make the calaveritas.
  • Wait for the mixture to cool and cut the halves of the skull into two pieces and glue them with a bit of icing sugar and egg white.
  • If you do not have a skull-shaped plastic mold, you can make them like plasticine and give them a skull shape.
  • With the dye, paint your eyes on your mouth or put the name you want on your forehead.
  • You can also decorate with sequins or shakiras, CAUTION: Sequins and shakiras are not eaten.
