Nopal Tacos with Martajada Salsa

These delicious nopal tacos are a healthy alternative to enjoy at any time of the day, as they are easy to prepare and yield quite a bit; the nopal helps prevent heart diseases thanks to its high content of amino acids, fiber, and antioxidants. They are also served with a tasty martajada salsa, which you can use to accompany other dishes as well.

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 3 cups nopal
  • 1 cup tomato, for the nopales
  • 1/2 cups red onion, for the nopales
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice, for the nopales
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar, for the nopales
  • 1 tablespoon oregano, for the nopales

  • 5 tomatoes, for the salsa
  • 1 garlic, for the salsa
  • 3 morita chiles, for the salsa

  • Heat a pot with water, add the nopales, baking soda, salt, and cook for approximately 7 minutes; remove and strain. Set aside.
  • Mix the nopales with red onion, tomato, lime juice, vinegar, oregano, and season with salt.
  • Roast the tomatoes, onion, garlic, and morita chili for 5 minutes (without burning). In a molcajete or mortar, grind the ingredients; if necessary, add a little water to grind better, add salt and set aside.
  • Assemble the tacos with the prepared nopales, serve with salsa and Cotija cheese.
