  • 1/2 kilos masa dough
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • salt
  • 1/4 cups water
  • vegetable oil
  • lettuce, in thin strips
  • queso fresco, crumbled
  • sour cream
  • avocado, sliced, for garnish
  • tomato , sliced, for garnish
  • red salsa, for serving

  • In a bowl, mix the corn masa, wheat flour, and salt. Gradually pour the water to hydrate the dough.
  • Divide the dough into portions, place in a tortilla press with a plastic bag and flatten. The tortilla should be slightly thicker than a regular tortilla. Flatten the edges with your fingers.
  • Fry the gorditas in a pan with enough oil over medium-high heat and submerge them to make them puff up. Fry for 3 to 5 minutes or until cooked and slightly golden. Remove the Veracruz-style gorditas and place them on a plate with absorbent paper.
  • Serve on a large plate and garnish with lettuce, fresh cheese, cream, tomato, avocado, and sauce.
