In a small pot, heat the milk with the garlic cloves, nutmeg, and thyme until it boils. Remove from heat.
Grease a Pyrex dish and place a layer of potatoes. Cover with 1/3 of the milk and 1/3 of the cheese, repeat with another layer of potatoes and continue for 3 layers.
Bake the potatoes for 50 minutes or until they are well cooked and the cheese is golden brown.
