Many times, beans, even when purchased from the supermarket, may have small stones or lentils mixed in. Check that your beans do not have anything they shouldn't.

Wash and rinse them until the water runs clear, 3 or 4 times to remove all the dirt.

Cover your beans with water in the pot where you will cook them; if any float, remove it.

Add some herbs, such as epazote or bay leaf and onion, for more flavor.

Turn on high heat and let them cook; this may take several hours.

If the water runs low, add a little more to cover them again to prevent them from burning. Repeat this process until they are completely cooked. Season with salt or chicken broth and serve hot.
