Potatoes Au Gratin is a classic French recipe, also known as Dauphinoise potatoes. The potatoes are cooked in a saucepan with milk, shallots, and nutmeg. Once soft, they are transferred to a baking dish in the oven where the cheeses are gratin.

Ingredients

8 servings
  • 1 clove of garlic peeled and in half
  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter softened
  • 2 1/2 cups of whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons of shallot chopped
  • 1/4 of teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 of teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 kilo of potato peeled and cut into slices 3 cm (1.18 in) thick
  • 1/2 cup of Gruyere cheese grated
  • 1/4 of cup of parmesan cheese grated

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 190°C - (374°F)
In a baking dish, scrub with garlic halves and grease it with the butter. Set aside. Mix the milk, shallots, salt, pepper, nutmeg and potatoes in a saucepan and wait until it starts boiling. Cook 8 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.
Put the mixture of milk and potatoes in the greased baking dish and sprinkle with the cheeses.
Cook in the oven for 3 minutes or until the potatoes are browned. Allow to cool 10 minutes before serving.
