The mojito is a popular cocktail originating from Cuba, made with rum, sugar (or sugar syrup), lime, mint, and sparkling water. It is believed that the mojito was invented by the Cuban restaurant La Bodeguita del Medio, but history highlights that it was created during the time of Prohibition in the United States, when those wanting to drink alcohol legally had to go outside the US, for example to Cuba. Many Americans used to drink a cocktail similar to the mojito but made with bourbon. Due to the lack of these spirits in the Caribbean, they were replaced with white rum. Originally, a little tequila was added; in some places in Mexico, it is still made this way.
