The mojito is a popular cocktail originating from Cuba, made with rum, sugar (or sugar syrup), lime, mint, and sparkling water. It is believed that the mojito was invented by the Cuban restaurant La Bodeguita del Medio, but history highlights that it was created during the time of Prohibition in the United States, when those wanting to drink alcohol legally had to go outside the US, for example to Cuba. Many Americans used to drink a cocktail similar to the mojito but made with bourbon. Due to the lack of these spirits in the Caribbean, they were replaced with white rum. Originally, a little tequila was added; in some places in Mexico, it is still made this way. (Source: Wikipedia) Preparation Ingredients - 4 ounces (120 ml) of aged rum (either white or brown) - Juice of half a lime - 1 sprig of mint (mentha spicata) - 2 teaspoons of sugar - 4 ice cubes - Seltzer water or soda - 1 slice of lime for garnish or a sprig of mint Instructions - Add the juice of half a lime and the sugar directly to the glass and muddle it with a pestle. - Add the mint, gently muddling it, but not too much. - Then add the ice, pour in the white rum, and fill the glass with seltzer or sparkling water. - Stir and garnish with a straw or stirrer, a slice of lime, and a sprig of mint.
