We spend hours at the gym, eat healthy, and do everything possible to stay fit and show off our bodies during the long-awaited Easter vacations and nearby holidays.
But as soon as we arrive at the beach or our chosen tourist destination, we completely forget our healthy lifestyle, and in many cases, we even come back with a few extra pounds.
To prevent this from happening, take care of your body while traveling. Our friends from ActitudFEM shared some tips that will help you enjoy a healthier vacation:
1. Listen to your body: Many times we eat just because food is presented to us, without even being hungry. A clear example is on the plane, where regardless of whether we've had breakfast before boarding, as soon as we see the cart coming, we lower our tray table and adjust our seat as quickly as possible. Always evaluate how hungry you are; if it's just a craving, ask the flight attendant for only a (low-fat) bar or a pack of nuts.
2. Pack healthy snacks: Almonds, nuts, dried fruits, sunflower seeds, chia, pumpkin seeds, fruits, and vegetables that you can eat on the go. In some places, you may not be allowed to bring food, especially when changing countries, but if you keep sealed bags in your suitcase, there is generally no problem.
3. Take your time to find a restaurant: Many times while sightseeing, we spend several hours without eating, and when hunger strikes, we sit down at the first restaurant we see, which will generally be a fast-food place since they are the most common in tourist areas.
4. Check the restaurant menu: There are many places that offer delicious and healthy food. Always prefer grilled or boiled foods instead of fried ones, and choose vegetables or salad as a side dish instead of fries.
5. Prepare your own food: There are many hostels or hotels that have their own kitchen where you can prepare food to your liking. This way, you can stick more closely to your diet and even prepare some healthy snacks to take on the road.
6. Drink in moderation: If you are one of those people who associate the beach with piña coladas, margaritas, beer, among other drinks, consume them but in moderation. You can order one piña colada for every three glasses of water you drink, so you won't have the excuse of being thirsty and will also moderate your intake.
7. Drink water: Throughout the day and during your entire trip. Water calms the anxiety that we often confuse with hunger and will keep you hydrated throughout the day.
8. Share your food: If you are traveling with family or friends, share dishes. Generally, the portions served in restaurants can be divided, allowing you to eat less.
9. Plan your activities in advance: This way, you can also plan time for your meals and avoid going hungry.
10. Move around: When traveling, there are many places that can be visited on foot. Walk along the beach, look for hiking spots in the countryside or ride a bike, swim in the pool, take the stairs in the hotel, etc. There are always options to stay active.
Remember that it's not about suffering; vacations are a time to enjoy. Additionally, taking care of your eating habits doesn't have to be stressful if you get your body used to eating healthily.
