Take care of your body while traveling

We spend hours at the gym, eat healthy, and do everything possible to stay fit and show off our bodies during the much-awaited Easter holidays and nearby long weekends.

But as soon as we arrive at the beach or our chosen tourist destination, we completely forget about our healthy lifestyle, and many times we even return with a few extra pounds.

To prevent this from happening, take care of your body while traveling. Our friends from ActitudFEM shared some tips that will help you enjoy healthier vacations:

1. Listen to your body: Many times we eat just because food is passed in front of us, without even being hungry. A clear example is on the plane, where regardless of whether we had breakfast before boarding, as soon as we see the cart coming, we lower our tray table and adjust our seat as quickly as we can. Always assess how hungry you are; if it's just a craving, ask the flight attendant for just a (low-fat) snack bar or a packet of nuts.

2. Pack healthy snacks: Almonds, walnuts, dried fruits, sunflower seeds, chia, pumpkin seeds, fruits, and vegetables that you can eat on the go. In some places, you are not allowed to bring food, especially when changing countries, but if you keep sealed bags in your suitcase, there is usually no problem.

3. Take your time to find a restaurant: Many times while sightseeing, we go for several hours without eating, and when hunger strikes, we sit down at the first restaurant we see, which is usually fast food since they are the most common in tourist areas.

4. Check the restaurant menus: There are many places that offer delicious and healthy food. Always prefer grilled or boiled foods instead of fried ones and choose vegetables or salad as a side instead of fries.

5. Prepare your own meals: There are many hostels or hotels that have their own kitchen where you can prepare meals to your liking. This way, you can stick more to your diet and even prepare some healthy snacks to take on the road.

6. Drink in moderation: If you are one of those people who associate the beach with piña coladas, margaritas, beer, among other drinks, drink them but in moderation. You can order one piña colada for every three glasses of water you drink, so you won’t have the excuse of being thirsty and will also moderate your intake.

7. Drink water: Throughout the day and during the entire trip. Water calms anxiety that we often confuse with hunger and will keep you hydrated throughout the day.

8. Share your food: If you are traveling with family or companions, share the plates. Generally, the portions served in restaurants can be divided, so you will eat less.

9. Plan your activities in advance: This way, you can also plan time for your meals and avoid going hungry.

10. Move: When traveling, there are many places that can be visited on foot. Walk on the beach, look for places in the countryside to hike or bike, swim in the pool, go up and down the hotel stairs, etc. There are always options to stay active.

Remember that it’s not about suffering; vacations are a time to enjoy, and taking care of your eating habits doesn’t have to be stressful if you train your body to eat healthily.
