If you don't have buttermilk, you can use the same amount of milk with a little lemon juice.
Place the oven rack in the middle and preheat to 400º F.
Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into the mixing bowl, add the flat beater and mix with the butter until the mixture looks even with small bits. Add buttermilk or milk and mix just to combine the mixture.
Pour the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead a little until smooth. Sprinkle a little flour on top and roll out with a rolling pin to a thickness of 1.5 cm.
Cut the biscuits with a round cutter and place them spaced apart on a baking sheet. Continue with the remaining dough, using the scraps that are left.
Bake until they have risen and are golden for 18 to 20 minutes.
Serve warm. To reheat, wrap them in aluminum foil and place in the oven at 350ºF for 10 minutes.
