King Cake with Chocolate Coverage

An easy and delicious way to make your own king cake and celebrate this beautiful Mexican tradition with your family. It will be delicious and is very easy to prepare.

  • 250 grams flour
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 3 tablespoons water, warm
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 80 milliliters cow's milk
  • 5 milliliters vanilla essence
  • orange zest
  • 90 grams butter
  • 50 grams vegetable shortening, for decoration
  • 50 grams flour
  • 50 grams icing sugar

  • maraschino cherries
  • chocolate, white and milk

  • Mix the yeast with the water and sugar, and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • Sift the flour and form a volcano with it. Inside the volcano, add the rested yeast. Add the eggs and milk.
  • Incorporate the vanilla and orange zest. Add the butter. Knead until you have a flexible, manageable dough that doesn’t stick to your hands; you can add more flour until you achieve the desired consistency, slap it against the table, and let it rest until it doubles in size in a bowl with oil.
  • When it has doubled in size, knead for a moment and form a ball.
  • Make a hole in the middle of the dough ball and rotate it with your wrists until it reaches the desired size. Let it rest until it doubles in size in a warm place. When it has doubled in size, brush the entire cake with egg, add the nuts and the figurines.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • For the coverage Mix the vegetable shortening with the flour and powdered sugar until well incorporated and refrigerate for a moment, then use your hands to make small balls, flatten them, and place them on the cake.
  • Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until golden brown and let cool.
  • Once the cake has cooled, melt the chocolate (white/dark) and drizzle it over the entire cake with a spoon for a fun and tasty touch.
