Classic French Toast

A great recipe to make French Toast, also known as Pain Perdu. It is served with maple syrup, butter, and can be topped with fruit like strawberries.

  • 6 eggs
  • 3/4 cups whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon powder
  • 2 grams nutmeg
  • 1 gram salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 slices bread, thick (about 1.5 cm) preferably day-old
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 10 milliliters maple syrup
  • 3/4 cups cow's milk

  • Whisk together the eggs, cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  • Arrange the slices of bread in a pyrex dish (in a single layer) and pour the egg mixture on top. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • Flip the slices of bread and let them rest for another 10 minutes, absorbing all the liquid.
  • Preheat the oven to 120º Celsius.
  • Place a rack over a baking sheet (if available). If not, grease the baking sheet.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of oil.
  • Fry half of the bread slices until golden brown, 2-3 minutes on each side.
  • Transfer the fried slices to a rack on a baking sheet.
  • Clean the skillet, and repeat step 7 with the remaining bread, oil, and butter.
  • Place the rest of the French toast on the baking sheet and put it in the oven for a few minutes until ready to serve.
  • Serve with warm maple syrup.
