Croque Monsieur

We give you the recipe for the classic croque monsieur so you can start your days with this delicious cheese-gratin sandwich made with gruyere cheese, ham, and béchamel sauce. The best combination between two soft and delicious slices of bread.

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups cow's milk
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 12 slices Oroweat® Buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature
  • 12 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 8 slices deli ham

  • Preheat the oven to 220°C.
  • In a small pot, add the butter and cook until melted, then add the flour all at once and cook while stirring. Add the milk, season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper, and cook until it thickens and has a sauce-like consistency. Set aside.
  • Spread a little butter on one slice of Oroweat® buttermilk bread and then add some béchamel sauce, a slice of gruyere cheese, ham, more béchamel sauce, cheese, and cover with another slice of bread. Repeat until you have 4 sandwiches with three layers each.
  • Place the sandwiches in a baking dish and cover with béchamel sauce and more cheese.
  • Bake for about 10 minutes or until golden. Serve immediately.
