Homemade Mexican Picadillo

  • 6 tomatoes, quartered, for the sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, for the sauce
  • 1/4 onions, for the sauce
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 onions, finely chopped
  • 600 grams ground beef
  • 1/4 cups tomato purée, optional
  • 3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 serrano chiles, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cups peas
  • 1/2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 leaf bay
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoons pepper
  • rice, for serving
  • tortillas, for serving
  • beans, for serving

  • Blend the tomatoes, garlic, and onion. Set aside.
  • In a skillet over high heat, heat the oil and cook the onion, then add the meat and cook for 7 minutes or until it changes color. Add the tomato puree and cook for two more minutes.
  • Add the vegetables and cook for two minutes. Add the sauce and spices, bring to a boil, and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes or until the liquid has reduced.
  • Season and serve.
