Basic King Cake

  • 4 envelopes yeast
  • 5 cups flour
  • 200 grams butter
  • 4 eggs, whole
  • 8 egg yolks
  • eggs, for brushing

  • oranges, candied in strips

  • 1 cup condensed milk
  • 1/2 teaspoons table salt
  • 1 tablespoon tea, orange blossom
  • 1 cup candied fruits, chopped toppings: fig, acitrón, lemon, cherries, raisins

  • Dissolve the yeast in a little warm water.
  • Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of flour.
  • Mix well and let this dough rest in a warm place until it doubles in size.
  • Around 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, sift the flour on a table and form a sort of hollow volcano in the center.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients there, except for the chopped fruit.
  • With your hands and gentle punches, incorporate everything.
  • Then, let the dough rest again until it doubles in size.
  • Once ready, you can work it on a flat surface with a rolling pin. Roll out to form a rectangle.
  • In the center, place chopped covered fruit and the figures of the Child God that you desire.
  • Cover the center with the sides to form a thin rectangle and shape the ring on a baking sheet.
  • Brush with egg and decorate to your liking with the ingredients you have for it.
  • Bake at 180ºC for 25 minutes.
