Chocolate Cereal Skulls

Sugar skulls are traditional for the Mexican celebration of Día de Muertos; they are usually made of sugar or chocolate, but this recipe gives you a different option, as you can use any cereal you have at home. These cereal skulls are easy, fun, and delicious!

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • food coloring, blue, pink, yellow, purple, etc.
  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate
  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate
  • 4 cups corn flakes
  • colorful sugar
  • organic cempasúchil flower, petals

  • In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar with the lemon juice; divide the powdered sugar mixture into ziplock bags and add a different food coloring to each one, close and rub with your hands to mix; the color can be as intense as you want, so the amount will depend on you, then set aside.
  • Melt the dark chocolate and the white chocolate.
  • Add the melted dark chocolate to half of the cereal and mix until completely coated; repeat the step with the white chocolate and the other half of the cereal and set aside. Then, rub a little oil on your hands and place a large spoonful of cereal in them.
  • Shape the skull with your hands, manipulating it as necessary to achieve it. Refrigerate.
  • Once the skull is cold, finish shaping it with a thick stick that you have at home.
  • Decorate with colored icing, marigold petals, and colored sugar.
