Chocolate and Amaranth Skulls

Prepare chocolate skulls for the Day of the Dead altar or to give as gifts on this Día de Muertos, as the touch of Smucker's® blueberry jam, chocolate, and amaranth will make them simply irresistible.

  • water, for the double boiler
  • 1 3/4 cups bittersweet chocolate, cut into small pieces or chips
  • 1/4 cups Smucker's® Blueberry Jam
  • 2 cups amaranth
  • 2 cups icing sugar, for the icing
  • 1/4 cups water, for the icing
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice, for the icing
  • blue dye
  • orange food coloring
  • green food coloring
  • pink dye

  • Heat water in a pot over medium heat, and when ready, place the chocolate in a bowl that fits the size of the pot and melt in a double boiler for 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Mix the amaranth, Smucker's® blueberry jam, and melted chocolate in a bowl until integrated. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  • Place the mixture on a board and shape it into the head of a skull. Let cool for 20 minutes or until it solidifies.
  • For the icing: Mix the powdered sugar, water, and lemon juice in a bowl with a spoon. Divide the mixture into 4 bowls and add different food colorings to each: blue, orange, green, and pink. Place in piping bags and set aside.
  • When your chocolate skull is solidified, decorate the eyes with orange color, place dots around the eyes to form the eye decoration, use pink to create lines on the forehead of the skull and on the sides of the eyes, also use pink for the nose, use blue for the teeth and some lines on the top of the head. Let cool for 5 minutes or until hardened.
