Easy Capirotada

Capirotada is a typical Mexican dessert made with golden-brown bread soaked in a delicious and aromatic piloncillo syrup, cinnamon, and anise, accompanied by peanuts, raisins, and aged cheese. It is absolutely delicious!

  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1 piloncillo
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 5 pieces of bread, sliced
  • 3/4 cups peanuts, toasted
  • 3/4 cups raisins
  • 1 cup añejo cheese, crumbled

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • In a small pot over medium heat, heat the water with the piloncillo, cinnamon, and anise. Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes or until it becomes a thick syrup. Set aside.
  • In a deep skillet, heat the oil over medium heat and fry each slice of bread until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
  • In a baking dish, place slices of bread, drizzle with the piloncillo syrup, add peanuts, raisins, and aged cheese, and repeat the process until you have two layers.
  • Bake for 15 minutes. Let cool.
  • Serve with a cup of hot coffee and more honey.
