Capirotada is a typical Mexican dessert made with golden-brown bread soaked in a delicious and aromatic piloncillo syrup, cinnamon, and anise, accompanied by peanuts, raisins, and aged cheese. It is absolutely delicious!
In a small pot over medium heat, heat the water with the piloncillo, cinnamon, and anise. Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes or until it becomes a thick syrup. Set aside.
In a deep skillet, heat the oil over medium heat and fry each slice of bread until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
In a baking dish, place slices of bread, drizzle with the piloncillo syrup, add peanuts, raisins, and aged cheese, and repeat the process until you have two layers.
Bake for 15 minutes. Let cool.
Serve with a cup of hot coffee and more honey.
