Insert the cinnamon sticks into the banana pieces. Place them in a thick-bottomed pot, cover them with sugar, add margarine, salt, vanilla extract, and water.
Cook over medium heat and stir regularly until almost all the liquid has evaporated and only the syrup remains.
Serve immediately.
