German Cookies Spritzgebâck

These delicious butter cookies are traditional during the Christmas season in Germany. They have a rich texture that melts in your mouth when bitten. They are perfect for decorating with a bit of chocolate or for enjoying on their own. Make them and share with everyone or make them as gifts; they will be a hit with all.

  • 380 grams butter, softened
  • 250 grams icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 500 grams sifted flour
  • 125 grams almonds, or ground nut
  • 100 grams bittersweet chocolate, or milk

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  • Line 2 or 3 baking sheets with parchment paper. Place the butter in a bowl and beat until softened. Mix it with the sugar, vanilla, and salt until the sugar is absorbed. Gradually add 2/3 of the flour, mixing continuously.
  • Add the rest of the flour and the almond and mix until a dough forms. Transfer the dough to a piping bag and shape vertical pieces of 7.5 cm long on the baking sheets or give any shape to your cookie (heart, circle, etc.).
  • Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown and transfer to a wire rack. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a double boiler. Dip the cookie halfway and place them on the rack to dry.
