Grease a loaf pan with butter. Line the bottom with wax paper.
Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs one by one, then add the vanilla extract and applesauce. At low speed, gradually add the flour mixture and continue mixing.
Add the chopped pear, mixing gently with a spatula. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan, insert the two whole pears into the mixture, sprinkle with almonds, and bake for about 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler and set aside.
Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Unmold and remove the wax paper. Serve with the side where the tips of the pears are visible, and finally drizzle melted chocolate on top.
