Tequeños are a delicious recipe from Venezuelan cuisine that is perfect for snacking. They are tasty cheese sticks that have a golden-brown texture, and with every bite, you will enjoy that lovely crunch and melted cheese. Delicious!
Cut the cheese lengthwise in half; cut each half into 4 sticks. Freeze the sticks for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add the butter; mix with your hands until it has a crumbly consistency. Add the water and egg; stir until the mixture forms a smooth dough. Knead it on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic; let it rest for 5 minutes.
Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to make a rectangle; cut it lengthwise into 8 strips. Wrap 1 strip around each cheese stick so that it is completely covered.
Heat the oil in a medium saucepan and add the wrapped cheese sticks in batches; cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until they are golden brown. Drain them on paper towels. Serve them warm.
