Ingredients

8 portions
  • 400 grams monterey cheese
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 5 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cups water, cool
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup oil

Preparation

Cut the cheese in half lengthwise; Cut each half into 4 sticks. Freeze the sticks for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the flour, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add the butter; Mix with your hands until it has the consistency of thick crumbs. Add the water and the egg; Stir until the mixture forms a soft dough. Mash it on a lightly floured surface for 5 min. or until it is soft or elastic; let it rest 5 min.
Flatten the dough with a rolling pin and make a rectangle; cut it lengthwise in 8 strips. Wrap 1 strip around each cheese stick so it is completely wrapped.
Heat the oil in a medium saucepan and add the cheese sticks wrapped in batches; cook 3 to 5 min. or until they are golden brown. Drain them in paper towel. Serve them warm.
