Venezuelan Cheese Arepas

One of the most famous dishes from Venezuela, characterized by its variety of fillings; it can be enjoyed at any time, whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Try these cheese arepas and enjoy their great flavor. They are a very easy Hispanic dish to make!

  • 800 grams corn masa flour, for the dough
  • 500 milliliters water, for the dough
  • 1 teaspoon salt, for the dough
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for the filling
  • 250 grams Manchego cheese, for the filling

  • In a bowl, add warm water and dissolve the salt, once ready, add oil and gradually incorporate the pre-cooked corn flour, mixing all the ingredients until a soft and moist dough forms.
  • Form medium-sized balls of dough and press with the palm of your hand until you form discs approximately 1 cm thick, and set aside.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, place the formed discs one by one, waiting 5 minutes or until they turn golden brown on both sides.
  • Grate the Manchego cheese and set aside.
  • Using a knife, cut horizontally to open and fill with Manchego cheese, return the arepas to the skillet to melt the cheese or if you prefer, you can bake them for about 3 minutes in a preheated oven.
