Carnitas Chalupitas

Try these delicious carnitas chalupitas with onion, cilantro, and Salsa Don Danny Herdez®. Chalupitas are fried tortillas and are a very well-known dish from Puebla. With this chalupas recipe, you will learn how to make homemade carnitas from scratch, and as a tip, you can also use whole milk to cook the carnitas; they will turn out extra tasty!

  • 400 grams masa dough
  •   water water
  • 1 tablespoon lard

  • 4 sprigs marjoram
  • 4 sprigs thyme
  • 3 leaves bay
  • 10 black pepper
  • 1 orange, in quarters

  • 1 cup Herdez® Don Danny salsa, (300 g)
  • 1/2 cups onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cups fresh cilantro, finely chopped

  • In a bowl, mix the corn dough, water, lard, and salt, and knead until fully combined.
  • Form balls with your hands and, using a press, shape tortillas, then fry them in the lard. Drain on paper towels.
  • In a pot, cook the lard, onion, and meat; cook until browned. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook for 30 minutes.
  • Mix in a bowl the Salsa Don Danny Herdez®, onion, and cilantro.
  • Serve the chalupa, followed by the sauce and the carnitas. Decorate with cilantro, serve with limes, and enjoy.
