How to disinfect strawberries

Strawberries contain fiber and vitamin C, making it important to consume them frequently; however, it's essential to know how to disinfect them, as they may contain some pathogens. Here, I will explain how to properly disinfect strawberries. Follow this step-by-step guide.

Step by Step

1
Do not wash the strawberries until you are going to consume them; also, keep them refrigerated in a closed plastic bag or an airtight container.
2
When you are going to consume them, separate those that are soft or have poor color or smell.
3
Place the strawberries in a wide colander and place them under running water.
4
Constantly move them to remove any dirt, grime, or chemicals they may contain. Rinse abundantly.
5
Do not remove the green stem of the strawberries until you have disinfected them; otherwise, microorganisms may enter the pulp, and disinfection will not be effective.
6
Once the water runs clear, disinfect them as you normally do, with a few drops of disinfectant following the product's instructions. Do not leave them in the disinfecting water for too long; leaving them too long will affect their consistency, color, and flavor.
7
Once disinfected, take them out of the water, drain them, and now cut the stem of the strawberry (pull it off directly with your hand), do not cut with a knife. Strawberries should be refrigerated within 2 hours of being cut. If left out for longer, you should discard them, as they are very prone to spoilage.
