What is chamoy?

Sometimes we overlook what our favorite foods contain. Chamoy, for example, is a national favorite that brings together everything that pleases the Mexican palate: sweet, tangy, and spicy. But, what does it contain? It's not too complicated, and today we'll tell you everything that goes into chamoy and how it originated. Plus, we’ll leave you the recipe so you can make it better and tastier at home.

What is it?

Chamoy is a Mexican sauce made from dehydrated fruit, chili, corn, salt, sugar, vinegar, and water, with a flavor that is sweet, spicy, and tangy. Surely you didn't know it contained all these ingredients!

Where did it come from?

It is said that its origin is very distant and that it is an adaptation of a traditional Japanese dish. That's right, even though it is very typical of Mexico, the recipe resembles that of the Nippon country, which involves pickled peaches dyed red with vegetable coloring.

Types of chamoy

As we know, chamoy can be found in various versions, and here are the most popular ones:

- Liquid chamoy, this is the most famous version, which can be used as a dipping sauce and even to candy fruits.

- Powdered chamoy, a favorite among kids and excellent for seasoning fruits and vegetables to add that tangy spiciness.

- Solid chamoy, known in the form of candies that you suck on; it is simply the liquid version solidified and not eaten with anything, just enjoyed on its own.

Everything in moderation

Chamoy is delicious; we eat it from a young age, and few Mexicans can resist it. However, it should be consumed in moderation, as the mixture of chili, vinegar, and salt can be a bit heavy. Overconsumption may lead to gastritis or stomach irritation; nothing serious, but it's better to avoid discomfort and enjoy it from time to time with family.

Recipes

This is the best recipe you’ll find for homemade chamoy. You can also delight the kids' palates with chamoy snow, the classic chamoy-covered apples, or even prepare, and this is just for adults, refreshing chamoy mojitos.
