They say that if you want to get to know a city and its society, there’s nothing better than exploring its markets, as they are meeting points for people to gather and buy and sell the products that form the basis of their homes.
In Mexico City, in every neighborhood, you can find at least one market, whose colorfulness and diversity will captivate you.
But there are several markets that, due to their significance and prestige, you must know.
Jamaica Market
This market, famous for its variety of flowers and beautiful colors, is located at Guillermo Prieto 45, Venustiano Carranza, Jamaica, just steps from the Jamaica metro station, named in its honor.
Arriving at Jamaica Market is a complete sensory, visual, and olfactory experience; it transports you to a paradise filled with the varied and wonderful flowers that are the market's most characteristic feature, as they offer a variety close to five thousand types of flowers and plants. However, that’s not all you’ll find, as you can also discover fruits and vegetables, piñatas, sweets, grocery items, household goods, as well as clothing and footwear. You definitely have to visit it!
La Merced
This market is the oldest in Mexico City and serves as a major food supply center. Colorful stalls, snacks, kitchen items, traditional sweets, and everything for your food business can be found in the aisles of this traditional place.
La Merced Market is the largest market in Mexico City. Inside, it has a metro station (Metro Merced) and generates nearly 500 tons of waste in a day. Can you imagine? With its great diversity of products, it meets all the needs of both national and foreign customers who visit it daily.
Sonora Market
This place has an endless array of esoteric and witchcraft products for all types of cults: Santería, shamanism, for the faithful of Santa Muerte, San Judas, San Charbel, and other veneration. Thousands of people come daily for cleansings or consultations about cards, tarot, and other divinations. Exotic animals, medicinal plants and herbs, candles to get jobs, to "attract" a loved one, and to cut bad vibes.
San Juan Market
This market is an essential stop in Mexico City, whether for sightseeing, delicious eating, or taking photos; it has become a special place for locals and foreigners due to its incredible diversity of fine, exotic, and gourmet foods.
Lion meat, chapulín sauces, suckling pig, goat, rabbit, quail, arrachera, armadillo, venison, buffalo, scorpion, escamoles, chapulines, jumiles, acosiles, and food that looks like it came straight out of a movie is just some of what you can find in this impressive market. We recommend eating at a delicatessen and trying the fine cheeses.
If there’s a magical place in every city, it’s undoubtedly the markets, and if you haven’t visited these special places, you need to check them out so you can fall in love with what you can find there!
