The high temperatures have arrived, and with them, some foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, or dairy products will be the most sensitive to transmitting this disease. Sometimes, the lack of hygiene in the kitchen and inadequate handling of food will increase the risk of contracting salmonellosis.
There are some exceptions; it is not a serious illness, but it produces very uncomfortable symptoms for those who suffer from it: diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain will generally appear between 12 and 72 hours after consuming food contaminated by the bacteria.
Implement some simple precautions to avoid suffering from salmonellosis during the hot seasons:
- Do not consume risky foods raw. To ensure that microorganisms disappear from food, it must be cooked at a temperature above 70 degrees.
- Use drinking water. It is essential for drinking and fundamental for preparing any food.
- Avoid contact between raw and cooked foods. A bacteria-free cooked food could become contaminated again if it comes into contact with a raw one. It is also dangerous to handle cooked food with any object that has been in contact with raw food. Keep knives, cutting boards, kitchen towels, etc., perfectly clean.
- Thoroughly clean the work surface in the kitchen. It is equally important to keep the countertop clean and clean it daily.
- Do not consume perishable foods at room temperature. Risky foods should always be kept at the appropriate temperature in bars and restaurants, complying with necessary sanitary conditions, protected by display cases.
Adults and children fall into a risk group, being more sensitive to suffering the illness more intensely, sometimes requiring hospitalization and the use of antibiotics. It is therefore important to pay special attention and monitor the consumption of risky foods in this group.
