1. Acidic Foods

This reaction can release small metal particles into the food, altering the taste and potentially posing health risks if consumed in large amounts. 

2. Salty Foods

According to various sources, foods such as cheeses and cold cuts should never be wrapped in aluminum. This is because they contain a good amount of salt, and this mineral facilitates the transfer of aluminum to the food and could even release aluminum ions from the foil, increasing the risk of contamination. 

3. Leafy Greens

Spinach, chard, and other leafy greens are essential in the diet as they are rich in vitamins and minerals. However, they should never be wrapped in aluminum foil as they contain acid that can react with aluminum

4. Bread and Baked Goods

While aluminum foil can be used for baking desserts like cheesecake or cake, it is not recommended for freezing bread. When you use this material to wrap this food and then defrost it, the texture will be soft and moist.

How Safe is it to Use Aluminum Foil? 

Currently, aluminum foil is considered safe for use in the kitchen, as long as it is used properly.  

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has stated that the use of aluminum foil to wrap food is not harmful to health, but the established limits should not be exceeded, as there could be aluminum migration to the food. However, it is important to avoid using it with acidic or salty foods, as these can increase the transfer of aluminum to the food. 

Other Alternatives

To preserve and cook food more safely, consider using products like:
  • Glass containers: They do not react with acidic or salty foods and also do not retain odors.  
  • Wax paper: It is ideal for baking without the risk of metal transfer. 
  • Zip-lock bags: They are perfect for storing food in the refrigerator or freezer.
