The tejocote is a fruit that grows on a tree known as Manzanillo, which begins its harvesting process in the second half of the year.
The characteristics of the tejocote are: it is round, yellow in color, and has a diameter of between 3 and 4 centimeters.
It is a completely Mexican product, and its name comes from the Nahuatl texócotl, which means wild or hard sour fruit, as it grows alongside pines and oaks.
Uses
This fruit is used in almost all Mexican homes during the Christmas holidays to prepare sweets and jellies. It can also be eaten raw.
Benefits
This fruit contains high levels of calcium, supports brain function and blood coagulation, thanks to its high hemoglobin production. Additionally, it contains B-complex vitamins and vitamin C, strengthening the immune system, contributing to iron absorption, and neutralizing substances that oxidize and destroy the body's cells (free radicals).
It protects the lungs due to its high vitamin C content, hence its bitter flavor, which if mixed with honey or made into syrup, acquires an irresistible taste for jellies and ates.
The tejocote, due to its size, is often pitted for small children and only the pulp is given to them, which helps boost their defenses in cold winter, in addition to seasoning the delicious punch that is so popular during the Mexican December season. But it is not only available in this country; the tejocote is also exported to other parts of the world, where it is appreciated for its flavor and nutrition.
Mexico is the main producer of tejocote, and the states with the highest production are Durango (northern Mexico), Jalisco and Michoacán (western), and Guerrero and Oaxaca (southern).
