This Christmas, we must be inclusive, and our family members with diabetes should not be left out of the celebration. There is a range of special and delicious foods that they can enjoy during Christmas dinner that are also beneficial for their health.
For appetizers, you can prepare a series of low-calorie snacks that contain no sugar:
- Steamed clams and mussels, grilled or canned in water (70 cal. per 100 gr.)
- Deviled eggs, remove the yolk (the white of 1 egg has 16 cal.) and add a teaspoon of natural tuna (20 cal.) or crushed tomato (8 cal.)
- Canapés with 1 slice of whole grain bread or 1 rice cake topped with turkey breast and fresh tomato (45 cal. in total).
- Canapés with 1 slice of whole grain bread or 1 rice cake spread with light cheese and cucumber slices (45 cal. in total)
Salads and vegetables are a delicious and healthy complement. You can make your own yogurt dressing or another ingredient and top it with nuts.
Salad with cherry tomatoes on a bed of arugula, a drizzle of olive oil, and seasoned with salt and fresh basil.
Grilled vegetables: eggplant, onion, potatoes, bell pepper, tomato, squash, zucchini, etc.
Fish and seafood are delicious and a good option; we suggest boiled prawns or grilled shrimp.
As for meats, roasted turkey is the best alternative and the star dish as it contains very little fat, is tasty, and nutritious.
For desserts, the most recommended is to use the least amount of sugar or substitutes for this ingredient. Use spices like vanilla and cinnamon that offer a delicious flavor and are positive for people with diabetes; you can also make delicious dishes with natural fruits baked or grilled.
