How to choose fruits and vegetables?

If you get nervous when shopping and don’t know how to choose fruits and vegetables, don’t worry, as here we explain how to know if the ingredients are fresh and in good condition. Pay close attention!

In general, it is important to use senses like touch, smell, and taste to choose the freshest ingredients. For example, if you see that the tomato is bruised or the guavas have brown spots, that means they are not a good option. In the case of cut fruit, use your sense of smell to detect any foul or strange odor.

But that's not all, as here we give you a small guide to help you distinguish when a fruit or vegetable is ripe and at its peak. You will eat fresher than ever!

Tomato

Choose tomatoes that have a bright color, are firm to the touch, and should not be bruised.

Avocado

This ingredient is essential in Mexican cooking, so opt for avocados that are firm but not too hard. Also, look for those with smoother skin.

Cucumber

Look for cucumbers that are smooth, firm, and have a uniform color. Do not take those that bend easily or feel watery.

Bell pepper

If you want to make a good alambre or fajitas, pay attention to the color, as it should be bright. The skin should be free of wrinkles and should feel heavy. Also, check that the stem is not moldy!

Watermelon

To choose a juicy and sweet watermelon, check that it feels heavy, has a smooth surface, and has a pale yellow spot where the sun hit it. As for the skin, choose a watermelon that is dark green; it will be the sweetest!

Garlic

For your spicy sauces to be delicious, look for garlic heads that do not have brown spots or are sprouting. Also, check that the garlic is not moist or moldy.

Melon

Opt for a melon that has an oval shape and gives off a sweet aroma. Make sure the spot where the stem was is slightly indented. Also, touch it, and if it sounds hollow, then it is the perfect melon.

Lemon

Another ingredient that cannot be missing in the kitchen! To choose a good lemon, make sure it is very aromatic, and the heavier it feels, the better, as it means it has more juice.

Mango

In addition to paying attention to bruises and brown spots, make sure to choose mangos that have a strong aroma and feel firm to the touch.

Onion

Always choose onions that feel firm to the touch and have a short stem. The skin should be dry and free of mold.

Pineapple

A good pineapple is one that gives off a fruity smell from the stem. Also, check that the leaves of the stem are a deep green color and that the fruit feels heavy overall.
