The United States, under the pretext of protecting its farmers, imposed a
17% tariff on Mexican tomatoes, a measure that has caused controversy both in Mexico and in the U.S. market itself.
Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, stated that “American farmers have been crushed by unfair practices for years,” directly pointing to Mexican tomato exports.
In turn, the Mexican government responded that the measure is politically motivated and that the success of
Mexican tomatoes in the U.S.
is due to their quality, not unfair competition.

According to official figures, 2 out of 3
tomatoes consumed in the U.S. come from Mexico. The
tariff will therefore increase prices for American consumers, causing concern in thousands of households and restaurants.
But in Mexico, the impact is also significant. Although initially, it might seem that prices will drop due to oversupply, producers warn that this would be unsustainable.
“In Sinaloa, tomatoes are worth 6 pesos per kilo. They reach the wholesale market at 12, but the end consumer pays up to 30. If we don’t export, there will be an oversupply and a collapse in domestic prices,” a producer interviewed by
UNOTV indicated.
Additionally, in seeking to offset losses in the foreign market,
farmers could raise the price of tomatoes in the domestic market.
Will the price of tomatoes rise in Mexico?
All indications are that it will. Although we may initially see a drop in prices due to excess
tomato supply, domestic producers warn that production costs must be covered, which would lead to an upward adjustment.
The
tariff would affect everyone:
- Mexican producers, by losing competitiveness
- Exporters, by facing tariff payments
- Field workers, due to potential job losses
- Consumers, both in the U.S. and Mexico
