Is tipping mandatory in restaurants? This is what Profeco says

No, tipping is not mandatory. According to Profeco, tipping is a voluntary gratuity, and no restaurant can force you to leave it. Including it in the bill without your authorization is also illegal and can be reported: “Providers may not apply coercive and unfair commercial methods or practices, nor abusive clauses or conditions in the provision of services.”
If you are charged the tip without your consent, you can ask for it to be removed from the total, speak with the managers, and if necessary, file a complaint with Profeco.
Can they require a minimum consumption in a restaurant?
Neither! Restaurants cannot set a mandatory minimum consumption. This imposed condition is also an abusive practice according to the law. As a customer, you can order only what you want without having to meet a specific amount.

Restaurants are obliged to:
- Show a complete menu with names, portions, and prices.
- Accept cash payments of any denomination.
- Clearly indicate the accepted payment methods.
- Provide a consumption receipt or ticket.
