In Mexico, we make the most of our space. So much so that we store pots in the oven and put things on top of the refrigerator. But did you know that it’s not a good idea? Here’s why you should never store things on top of the refrigerator.

In the name of maximizing space, we store boxes, small appliances, Tupperware, and other items on top of the refrigerator; all without knowing that you should never store things on top of the refrigerator. We’ll tell you why!

Running out of space in the kitchen? Even though it might be very tempting to put the toaster or boxes on top of the refrigerator, don’t do it! Here’s why you should never store things on top of the refrigerator.



According to experts, the main reason for not placing or storing anything on top of the refrigerator is that these objects prevent the appliance from releasing heat, causing the machinery to work harder. In short, the refrigerator will require more power, and your electricity bill will be higher.

Additionally, the top of refrigerators tends to heat up. Therefore, if we place something delicate on top, it could be damaged by the heat. Keep this in mind before placing anything on top.

Although it is recommended to leave some space between the wall, ceiling, and refrigerator for air circulation, this is not always possible. However, there are things that you definitely cannot store there, according to experts. Here are the things!

1. Medicines

Many medicines, vitamins, and dietary supplements should be stored in a cool, dry place to preserve their properties. Since the top of the refrigerator heats up, it is not recommended to place them there.

2. Fresh fruit

Something that you should definitely never store on top of the refrigerator is fresh fruit, such as bananas, apples, pears, avocados, and more. Why? The answer is simple: this part of the refrigerator collects dust, grime, and also has a higher temperature that will cause things to spoil faster.

3. Wine

To ensure the quality of wines, it is essential to keep them at the ideal temperature, depending on whether it is red, white, or sparkling. If you store wines on top of the refrigerator, the temperature will be quite high, and the quality will no longer be the same.

4. Heavy items

As mentioned before, good ventilation is essential for the proper functioning of the refrigerator. If you place things on top, you do not allow it to work correctly, and it is possible that things will not cool down. Additionally, it is dangerous to be lifting and lowering heavy items such as mixers, coffee makers, pots, and more.
