Where are potatoes the most expensive?

We know that white potatoes are very important in the kitchens of Mexicans, as we use them to cook potato cakes, chorizo with potatoes, picadillo, potato broth, mashed potatoes, and more. But it’s important to check prices before buying, as there are places where prices are sky-high. Be careful!

According to Profeco, potatoes are most expensive in Oaxaca. For example, the store El Piticó, located in the Reforma neighborhood, sells a kilo of this tuber for $50 pesos per kilo. The next highest price was found at the Mercado Público Hidalgo, in the Reforma neighborhood, where a kilo of potatoes is sold for $30 pesos.

So if you live in the city of Oaxaca, be cautious about the price of potatoes! It’s best to compare prices at different stores within the markets. You can also check prices on the websites of supermarkets

But not all news is bad, as there are places where potatoes are much cheaper than in Oaxaca. For example, a kilo is $11 pesos at the wholesale market in the Máximo Gámiz neighborhood in Durango. Likewise, you can find the price of potatoes at $22.90 at Bodega Aurrera, in the Chapultepec neighborhood, in Cuernavaca, Morelos.

Remember that potatoes are not only very versatile and even help reduce saltiness in dishes, but they are also rich in:
  • Fiber
  • Calcium
  • Choline
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Vitamin B6
