What did Frida Kahlo cook?

Knowing who Frida Kahlo is to understand her art, her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera, but also her passion for Mexico and its food.

The painter, who celebrated her birthday on July 6 (she would be 113), not only painted food, she also had a close relationship with it, so much so that Guadalupe Rivera (daughter of Diego Rivera and Guadalupe Marín) wrote a book titled “The Parties of Frida and Diego. Memories and Recipes.”

In it, memories are narrated based on the food that the painter's daughter remembers, with dishes like mole or manchamanteles, cheese-stuffed chiles, or buñuelos.

At Frida's house, there were always flowers and a large platter of Frida, Lupe Rivera recounts, and she remembers that the painter gifted her a cookbook that had belonged to Kahlo's mother.

The artist's gatherings were famous for their menus filled with typical Mexican flavors, which Frida took care to plan.

The painter got very close to Mexican cuisine to please Rivera and planned all the very Mexican menus for her parties, gatherings, or any special occasion. For example, at her wedding to Diego Rivera, the menu included oyster soup, cheese-stuffed chiles, black mole, among other dishes. As a curious fact, there were no utensils except for the soup; for everything else, there were tortillas.

Rivera Marín recounts that there was a gastronomic triangle among her, her mother, and Frida, as for a time, her mother and Frida lived in the same house, but on different floors. It was there that Guadalupe Marín taught her to cook for Diego.

Among the dishes that Frida learned from Rivera's ex-wife are chicken in pipián, chilaquiles, tamales with picadillo, chiles in walnut sauce, squash blossom soup, and pork with nopales.

However, later, in the famous blue house, Frida would have cooks who prepared these dishes, because the artist understood the importance of food in her life.

To celebrate the talented painter, we propose learning to cook some of her favorite dishes with these recipes:
