What is Q10?

Some call it “vitamin”, others refer to it as a “coenzyme” (or protein enhancer), “antioxidant”, and it is also called “organic compound”. Regardless of what they call it, what matters is: what is vitamin Q10 used for?

According to the National Cancer Institute of the United States, vitamin Q10 helps certain structures within cells called mitochondria to produce energy and also helps shield cells from damage by free radicals

In other words, it combats oxidative damage, which is a trigger and accelerator of degenerative processes and diseases that promote skin cancer and photoaging. This is why some creams and other dermatological products include vitamin Q10 among their ingredients.

In addition to caring for the skin, Q10 also has a positive effect on heart diseases, as it reduces the symptoms of heart failure; likewise, it decreases the number of migraine episodes, and even has a positive effect on physical performance, making it recommended for people who engage in sports or exercise routines.

Where can you find vitamin Q10?

While the body produces vitamin Q10 naturally, production decreases as a person begins to age, which is why it is important to include foods that contain it in the daily diet. Thus, vitamin Q10 can be found in:

1. Fatty fish such as salmon, herring, tuna, and sardines.
2. Beef.
3. Soy.
4. Nuts and peanuts.
5. Spinach and broccoli, among others.

Therefore, it is important to include these foods in your daily diet; or alternatively, consult with a doctor if it is possible to use a type of supplement that contains vitamin Q10, as some medications may have an unfavorable reaction with the use of Q10, especially those used as anticoagulants.
