The almonds are an ingredient that should not be missing in your kitchen, as they add a crunchy touch to granola, are ideal for preparing a healthy snack, or even to fill a Christmas loin. However, their attributes go beyond their delicious flavor, as they also have a series of health benefits.

The portal WebMD indicates that almonds are rich in various vitamins, minerals, and nutrients:
  • Fiber
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Vitamin B2
  • Vitamin E

Do almonds help regulate appetite?
In addition to being a healthy and convenient snack to take anywhere, a recent scientific study indicates that the consumption of this nut would help “improve the hormones that regulate appetite.” We’ll tell you everything you need to know about this research!

According to information published by the portal Medical News Today, the research was conducted by the University of South Australia (UniSA), which demonstrated that “people who eat almonds had better levels of hormones that regulate appetite compared to those who consumed a carbohydrate-rich bar.”

The study involved 140 participants aged between 25 and 65 years, who were overweight or obese. After fasting, one group of participants received a serving of almonds, while another received a bar. Their calorie intake was then monitored.

It is important to note that the experts did not observe a significant impact on calorie consumption, but they did observe “changes in the appetite hormones,” as it was noted that the consumption of almonds affected several hormones that cause the sensation of hunger.

The medical portal explains that “C-peptide responses were reduced by 47% in the group that ate almonds. This hormone reflects the level of insulin produced by the pancreas, and lower levels could increase insulin sensitivity, which would reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.” Additionally, it is mentioned that “other appetite-suppressing hormones, which depend on glucose, also increased in those who consumed almonds.”

Moreover, “glucagon levels, the hormone that produces satiety, increased by 39%. Meanwhile, the response of pancreatic polypeptide, which delays digestion and therefore food consumption, increased by 45%.” In the case of gastric inhibitory polypeptide, the hormone that regulates weight and food intake, it increased by 18%.

Best of all, in addition to almonds, previous studies indicate that walnuts and pistachios have similar results, so they could also help regulate appetite. All we can do now is wait for more research to confirm these incredible properties.

To conclude, we must clarify that this new study indicates that “people with overweight or obesity may develop resistance to the hormones that regulate appetite, resulting in a discordance between hormonal signals and perception.”

So now you know, don't hesitate to consult your nutritionist about this new study and add a healthy serving of nuts to your daily diet, as they are rich in fiber and various nutrients!
