You have probably noticed that for some time now, supermarket shelves have begun to fill with gluten-free or celiac-friendly products. Although they may seem more beneficial than their regular versions, pay close attention.
Learn more about this component so you can identify if gluten-free foods are ideal for your diet.
What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in many cereals, primarily in wheat, barley, and rye. Its presence in foods makes them more elastic (for example, flour dough) and gives breads and pastries greater volume. Generally, when bread or a cake has a fluffy consistency, it most likely contains gluten.
Why shouldn't I eat gluten?
Some people are intolerant to this protein, so consuming it can cause them discomfort. The main symptoms of celiac disease include bloating and abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, anemia, dermatitis, among others. Only those who are intolerant to the protein should follow a gluten-free diet. Since several of the most common symptoms of celiac disease can be confused with other digestive conditions, it is necessary to perform blood tests and biopsies of the small intestine to make a diagnosis.
What can I eat if I am celiac?
Any food made from grains (wheat, rye, and barley) should be eliminated from the diet. This means that flours, pasta, and breads (made with these grains) are not included in a celiac's diet. But that's not all. Some processed foods, such as soups, sauces, or dressings that may contain small amounts of gluten, should also be discarded.
If your doctor has already diagnosed you and you need to follow a gluten-free diet, don't worry. There are many alternatives that will allow you to maintain your health with a rich and balanced diet.
