The United States bans red dye

By Gretel Morales - 2025-01-16T11:17:24Z
The U.S. authorities have just announced a historic event: they are banning the use of red dye no. 3! However, this product has been used in food manufacturing for decades.

The AP portal explains that the decision to ban the use of red dye was announced 35 years after its use in cosmetics was banned, as it is potentially related to cancer.

This ban came after a group of health advocates made a formal petition in 2022, as it is linked to health issues.

The FDA states that it made the decision because some research “found that the dye caused cancer in laboratory mice.” Additionally, the AP explains that there is a statute that requires the FDA to ban any additive that causes cancer in people or animals.

Furthermore, the red dye cannot only be used in food, but its use is also not allowed in medicines, syrups, and dietary supplements.

Remember that this ban is only in effect in the United States.
