How to Save Water in the Kitchen

It is our duty as citizens to care for the environment, especially during a period of water scarcity, so here are 5 tips to save water from your kitchen. Try them out and let us know if they worked!

Save Cooking Water

If you soaked beans or rice or prepared steamed vegetables, save the cooking water to water the plants, as this will not only help to reuse that water but will also contain nutrients that will benefit your plants.

Turn the Tap to a Minimum

Although this advice may seem very obvious, it is important that you get used to reducing your water consumption to a minimum. For example, when washing fruit or vegetables, soap and scrub the ingredients with the tap closed. Afterwards, use a minimal amount of water to rinse everything.

Save Water When Washing Dishes

An excellent way to wash dishes is to use only 2 containers, sinks, or buckets of water.

The idea is that you put soap in one bucket and wash all the dishes there, while you will use the other bucket with clean water to rinse all the dishes. Additionally, you could add a splash of bleach to the soapy water to ensure they are clean and odor-free.

Soak Your Pots and Pans

An activity where we waste a lot of water is when washing stuck pots and pans, as it is common to turn on the water tap and leave it on while scrubbing away. This is why we recommend filling the utensil with a little water and bringing it to a boil, as it will be much easier to clean and remove stuck food.

Cook with Less Water

It may seem like a somewhat simplistic tip, but the reality is that we are used to boiling pasta, vegetables, and many other foods in pots almost full of water.

The next time you prepare a broth or pasta, add only the necessary amount of water, as we often use an excessive amount that ultimately goes down the drain.

Easier Recipes

We know that Mexicans love good food, so sometimes we use different utensils, cutting boards, pots, pans, and more. In this case, we suggest planning a little more when cooking:

  • Use only one cutting board for the ingredients

  • Don’t wash the blender until you finish using it; in many cases it can be used to make several dishes

  • Prepare options using only one pot or pan

Install a Water-Saving Tap

If you have the opportunity, we also recommend installing a water-saving tap in your kitchen, as it will allow you to use less water to wash dishes and fruits and vegetables. Don’t forget to compare prices, check the features, and ensure it is compatible with your tap. Also, buy a stopper to avoid wasting water while washing food.
