Krill oil is one of the most popular dietary supplements in recent years, as it is attributed with countless health benefits, however, what do experts say about krill oil? At kiwilimón, we took the task of investigating, so we explain what it is and what it is used for.

What is krill oil?
Krill oil is a dietary supplement obtained from a small crustacean called krill, which is very similar to a shrimp, but much smaller. The best thing about krill oil is that it is rich in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, two fatty acids from the omega-3 series.

On one hand, the Mount Sinai hospital explains that eicosapentaenoic acid is one of several omega-3 fatty acids, making it ideal for keeping your heart healthy and strong. The hospital also notes that "including more eicosapentaenoic acid in your diet has positive effects on coronary diseases, high triglycerides, hypertension, and inflammation."

In the case of docosahexaenoic acid, a scientific article published in 1999 states that this type of omega-3 is essential for the growth and development of children's brains, while it is also required for the proper functioning of adult brains. Furthermore, research also indicates that including these types of fatty acids in the diet "improves learning skills, while deficiency in these is associated with a learning deficit."

What is krill oil used for?
It seems that the benefits of krill oil are associated with its high content of omega-3. This type of fatty acid is related to "a reduction in pain and inflammation, while also preventing blood clots," according to the WebMD portal. However, the benefits of krill oil go beyond that, here we tell you everything you need to know!

Arthritis and joint pain
Experts from the Healthline portal indicate that since krill oil reduces inflammation, this could translate into less pain in the joints and symptoms of arthritis, both caused by inflammation.

The portal mentions several promising studies for people suffering from arthritis and joint pain. For example, one study found that krill oil significantly reduced markers of inflammation, stiffness, pain, and functional disability in patients with rheumatism or osteoarthritis.

To make matters better, a study involving 50 people with knee pain showed encouraging results, as after consuming krill oil for a month, the pain decreased considerably.

Anxiety
If you suffer from anxiety, krill oil could also help you, as the WebMD portal reports that a scientific study found that omega-3 consumption reduces anxiety levels, but at least 2 grams of omega-3 should be consumed per day. However, remember that dietary supplements do not replace medications, so it is best to consult your doctor before starting to consume krill oil.

Premenstrual syndrome
As mentioned earlier, krill oil is an excellent option for reducing inflammation, so it would also be a great ally when combating premenstrual syndrome. Experts explain that omega-3s could reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and cramps.

Cholesterol and triglycerides
As you know, omega-3 fatty acids are wonderful for the heart, so krill oil is also a great option for taking care of your heart. The Healthline portal mentions that this oil could be very effective in combating high levels of triglycerides, while also increasing good cholesterol.

Dry eyes
Krill oil seems to be an excellent option for those who suffer from dry eyes. The WebMD portal states that consuming krill oil for 3 months reduces dryness and its symptoms.

It is worth noting that krill oil is also used to combat conditions such as high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, diabetes, depression, and more, but there is not yet enough scientific evidence to support these uses.

Although not all the benefits attributed to krill oil have been scientifically proven, it does have many positive effects on various conditions, so consult your doctor, they will surely recommend it!
