Medicinal uses of the jacaranda

Herbalism and traditional medicine use all kinds of flowers, herbs, plants, and other ingredients, all with the aim of treating ailments naturally, but does the jacaranda have any medicinal use?

According to the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity, the flowers of the jacaranda, as well as its leaves and bark, have been used to treat amoebic dysentery, an intestinal disease.

On the other hand, a report published by La Jornada states that “dried leaves are used in the manufacture of an ointment that helps heal wounds. The infusion of the bark is very good for washing ulcers, and together, leaves and bark help in the treatment of syphilis and gonorrhea.”

Other sources indicate that the flowers, leaves, and bark are used in the treatment of neuralgia, varicose veins, and infections; however, it is important to consult a doctor before consuming home remedies prepared with jacaranda.

What do experts say?

Although much is said about the health benefits of jacaranda, there are few scientific studies that support this information. One of the most relevant was published in 2020 and states that “the extract of the jacaranda flower could be a natural antimicrobial and an alternative antioxidant due to its considerable amount of polyphenols.”

Additionally, this research explains that the results obtained in this study suggest the possibility of using jacaranda flowers in the food, cosmetic, and medicinal industries.
