Since the COVID-19 virus arrived in Mexico, prevention measures have not changed: wash your hands constantly and if that's not possible, use hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol.
Due to this, hand sanitizer, along with wipes and disinfectant sprays, began to run out in stores and supermarkets, prompting many people to search for ways to make them at home, just like with
face masks. Now, to make the safest way to create homemade hand sanitizer accessible, the Mexican Social Security Institute released a tutorial video to easily guide you through the process on its social media.
To make it, you will need the following ingredients, which you can find at a drugstore or pharmacy:
- 1-liter glass bowl
- Small glass container
- Fine mesh strainer
- Whisk
- Spoon
- 1 measuring cup
- 100 ml bottle to store it
- ¾ teaspoon of carbopol
- 90 milliliters of 72-degree ethyl alcohol
- ¼ teaspoon of pure glycerin
- ¼ teaspoon of triethanolamine
To make it, in the small glass container, sift the carbopol with the strainer to eliminate all lumps, using the spoon to pulverize it well. Then transfer the carbopol to the 1-liter bowl and mix it there with the alcohol, whisking it vigorously.
While gently stirring the mixture with the whisk, add the indicated amount of glycerin; it is important not to stop stirring, but do so gently.
Once the carbopol is completely dissolved, gradually add the triethanolamine, being careful not to exceed the amount, and gently whisking. At this point, the mixture will take on a gel-like consistency. If you find that the gel is too thick, you can add a little more alcohol to achieve the desired consistency.
Once ready, simply transfer your gel to the 100 ml bottle, and it will be perfect for use. Don't forget that although the gel is a great ally in combating the virus, handwashing is essential. If you have questions about COVID-19 symptoms or about the
