The history of the piñata dates back many years. According to historians, it arrived in Mexico through Spanish colonization, who learned about it from the Italians.
The piñata has its origins in China, and it was Marco Polo who brought it to Italy, from where it became known in other parts of the world.

Several versions explain why we break the piñata, and many agree that the piñata symbolizes the destruction of evil, revealing the fruits inside. The filling of the piñata represents breaking away from evil, resulting in the acquisition of goods.
Piñatas are a fundamental element in Mexican posadas. These festivities are purely traditional and deeply rooted from years past. They use elements that distinguish them from other types of Christmas celebrations, including decorations, music, songs, and the special dishes prepared.
Preparing a Mexican posada requires time and a bit of creativity, nothing difficult. Here are some tips you should follow:
- Choose an open space that allows enough room for your guests so they are not crowded. You should also think about where the piñata celebration will take place.
- Send your invitations in advance, as people have many posadas during these dates, so you should invite them early to organize their schedules.
- Select the types of drinks you will offer. It is very important to have a variety, as the intention is for all guests (young and old) to feel comfortable. (Here you can see some drink recommendations)
- Prepare some small gifts with candies or treats for the kids. You can use plastic, cardboard, or recyclable material cups, or bags. Decorate them with Christmas details and you’re done.
- Set up a table in a corner with accessories for music. This part is also very important so your guests can dance and sing. You should have a repertoire for all tastes.
- If your posada is in the evening, you should inform your guests to bring something to keep warm. If your budget allows, you can buy or rent heaters for the outdoors.
- For the piñata part, it is advisable to acquire more than two, as it is important to dedicate space for each type of guest. For example, one piñata for the kids, one for the teenagers, and one for the adults is a very good option. And you can put different items in each one.
- For food, we must not forget that it is also important to prepare things for all tastes. It will be important to know your guest list to determine how many will attend and the type of people to know if you should prepare any special dishes.
